BC Khimki head coach: Sergio Scariolo
In two decades on the bench at Europe's premier clubs, Sergio Scariolo has distinguished himself as the only head coach ever to win national titles in both Spain and Italy. At midseason, Scariolo accepted perhaps his biggest challenge yet, that of lifting BC Khimki Moscow Region into Europe's elite. The first step toward that goal is complete, as Scariolo's arrival sparked a pair of winning streaks that have catapulted Khimki into the Final Eight. The only Italian coach in Turin will bring vast experience to the rest of his task. Scariolo became one of the youngest-ever Euroleague Final Four head coaches with Scavolini Pesaro in 1991, a season after he had already raised the Italian League trophy. Soon, Scariolo moved to Spain to begin collecting titles there, too. He won Spanish League crown in 2000 with Real Madrid and in 2006 with Unicaja. He lifted the Spanish Cup in 1999 with Tau Ceramica and in 2005 with Unicaja. He also took Unicaja to its first Final Four in 2007. So great was Scariolo’s impact in Spain that he was recently chosen its national team coach, the first non-Spaniard so honored in half a century. Scariolo's impressive résumé lacks only a European club competition trophy, making for an identical Final Eight mission shared by Khimki and its head coach.
