Panionios lands Kavaliauskas, McNamara
Antanas Kavaliauskas, Panionios Panionios, one of two 2007-08 ULEB Cup representatives from Greece, has made major additions at two positions in recent days. The club announced Thursday the signing of Lithuanian center Antanas Kavaliauskas for the two years. That announcement followed the news that point guard Gerry McNamara is joining Panionios for next season. Kavaliauskas (208, 23), a reigning under-21 world champion with Lithuania, arrives from Texas A&M University of the NCAA, where he averaged 11.9 points and 6.3 rebounds last season. Kavaliauskas started his career in his hometown with Statyba Vilnius, then moved to Barton County Community College in the United States before joining Texas A&M. He won the gold medal at the 2005 Under-21 World Championships in Argentina, collecting 9 points and 5 rebounds in the final against Greece. McNamara (187, 24), a former NCAA champion with Syracuse University, returns to Greece after a short stay last season with Olympiacos, with whom he appeared in just one Euroleague game. McNamara was ineligible to play in the Greek League with Olympiacos, but will play both that competition and the ULEB Cup for Panionios. McNamara was known for his knack of making buzzer-beaters when he helped Syracuse win the 2003 NCAA title. He was member of the U.S. national team at the 2005 World University Games.
