Jarod Stevenson Unics Kazan Unics Kazan clinched second place in Group D with an 85-57 win over PAOK Thessaloniki on Tuesday night in Russia. Kazan trounced PAOK 48-22 in the second half after a close opening 20 minutes to put the game away. Both teams entered the game with a chance to finish in first place, but Kazan needed to settle for being the runner-up after hearing that Real Madrid won its game to grab first. Jarod Stevenson scored 15 to lead Unics, while Darjus Lavrinovic and Egor Meshcheryakov added 14 each, Sergey Chikalkin scored 12 and Saulius Stombergas 10. Blagota Sekulic came up big with 24 points and 14 rebounds for PAOK, but he was alone as the highlight for the visitors. PAOK led early and tied the score at 20-20 at the end of the first period and trailed only 38-36 at halftime, but Kazan raised its level in the second half, PAOK did not, and the hosts quickly put the game away.

PAOK came out firing and scored the game's first points as Feliks Kojadinovic drilled a three only to see Mateen Cleaves answer the same way for the hosts. The pace remained high as the teams traded baskets with PAOK grabbing an early 6-9 lead on Sekulic's layup. As quick as the game began, both teams also slowed down at the same time. JR Bremer came off the bench to keep PAOK ahead, and Ioannis Kalampokis made it 12-16 after two minutes. The lead swelled to 6 on Sekulic's next basket, but Kazan's Meshcheryakov and Stevenson came through from downtown to tie the score at 20-20 after 10 minutes. Darjus Lavrinovic capped an 8-0 Unics run that spanned the first two quarters with a layup at the start of the second period, but Drago Pasalic bettered him with a three-point play to put the visitors back on top. The lead changed hands on nearly every basket as the tension was felt on each possession. Jason Parker tied the game at 30-30 midway through the period, but Darjus Lavrinovic answered with three made free throws and Dusko Savanovic added a layup to give Kazan its biggest lead yet. However Sekulic wasn't done and his three-point play carried PAOK within 37-35 at halftime.

Blagota Sekulic PAOKSekulic started the second half in style with a pair of buckets to put PAOK on top, however Stombergas drilled a three to show who was in charge. Parker was responsible for another PAOK score, but that would be the visitors' last for some time. Meshcheryakov and Stevenson were the main guns in an 11-2 Kazan run that started to break PAOK's spirit. Even after a Sekulic layup and a Bremer triple brought the visitors within 54-48, Kazan scored the game's next 5 points to rebuild a double-digit lead, which stood at 61-50 after 30 minutes. Nine unanswered points at the start of the fourth quarter signaled victory for the hosts, who began to care more about what was happening in the group's other games. The final minutes became a celebration for the fans, as the score continued to rise and Vadim Panin sealed the result with his first 5 points of the game in the final minute.

SIREIKA, ANTANAS
Unics Kazan
"My team has won today and I should be pleased with the resulting score, but I'm not pretty sure my team has played the best possible way they could. In the beginning of the game my players seemed to act too cautiously – they had to get rid of the thoughts concerning the previous defeats. So I have made some changes in the line-up. My team began to play faster and faster thus one could notice in the end that the players enjoyed the game. The defense was quite different from the one we had in the first half."
PILAFIDIS, KONSTANTINOS
PAOK
"At first, I would like to congratulate our opponent for the victory. We must confess, we were able to compete with Unics in the first half, while the second turned out to be for us very hard – the lack of strength lead us to the final gap. One of the reasons for our defeat is that I consider the fact that the team was really tired. We had a tough match 48 hours before the game in Kazan, then a 12-hour flight to the capital of Tatarstan and, by the way, three of our players stayed at home due to some reasons, they couldn't help their team to show its best today. We tried to win, but failed. So I wish Unics good luck and to win many games in the National Championship!"
