Banvit thrashes Steaua, goes up to 4-4
Banvit Bandirma improved to make it to the Last 32 in regular season Group D by thrashing Steaua CSM EximBank Bucharest 90-60 at home on Wednesday. Banvit improved to 4-4 while Steaua dropped to 2-6. Courtney Fortson led the winners with 18 points on 4-of-5 three-point shots. Dominique Johnson added 17, 6 rebounds and 7 assists, Nusret Yildirim had 16 points while Adrien Moerman got 12 for Banvit. Gerald Lee had 19 points for Steaua while Aleksandar Rasic added 17. Fortson and Moerman shined early to give Banvit a 9-2 lead. Steaua found a go-to guy in Rasic, who got help from Lee to keep Steaua within 20-17 after 10 minutes. Back-to-back triples by Rasic gave Steaua its only lead of the game, 22-23. Jackie Carmichael rescued Banvit, Yildirim buried a couple of three-pointers and an unstoppable Moerman helped the hosts get a double-digit margin, 45-33, at halftime. Steaus got a bit closer, 55-47, late in the third quarter but Johnson stepped up with three bombs from downtown and got plenty of help from Fortson and Moerman to seal the outcome, 74-54, long before the final buzzer.
Moerman got Banvit going with a put-back jump hook which Lee erased with a layup. Fortson buried a triple off the dribble and a layup-plus-foul by Gasper Vidmar ignited the crowd at 9-2. Rasic scored around the basket, Johnson swished a jumper and Lee kept Steaua within 11-5. Fortson shined with a put-back basket and matched Lee's backdoor layup with free throws. Rasic took over with a reverse layup and followed it with a triple to bring Steaua within 15-12. Fortson and Marko Marinovic struck from downtown and a fast break layup by Moerman gave Banvit a 20-15 edge. A put-back layup by Lee kept Steaua as close as 20-17 after 10 minutes. Vidmar scored again early in the second quarter but Rasic buried back-to-back triples, the second one off a dribble to give Steaua its first lead, 22-23. A.J. Slaughter struck from downtown and Carmichael added a fast break slam that gave Banvit a 27-23 lead. Carmichael dunked again and a put-back layup by Johnson boosted the hosts' lead to 31-25. A triple by Yildirim made Steaua stop the game at 34-25. Rasic hit another three-pointer and a fast break layup by Lee gave the guests hope at 34-29. Carmichael scored in the low post and a corner triple by Yildirim made it a double-digit game, 39-29. Slaughter and Lee traded close jumpers and a layup by Moerman gave Banvit a 43-31 edge. Free throws by Slaughter and Moerman fixed the halftime score at 45-33.
Nicoara stepped up with a put-back basket soon after the break and Lee scored again to keep Steaua within 45-37. Yildirim buried his third triple and soon added another basket to keep Banvit out of trouble, 50-37. A three-pointer by Fortson made the guests call timeout at 53-37. Rasic tried to change things for a basket, Moerman answered with a tip-in and a put-back layup by Nicoara brought the guests a bit closer, 55-41. Rasic and Bill Amis made free throws and a fast break layup by Mihail Paul got Steaua within single digits, 55-47. Carmichael scored in the paint, Vidmar split free throws and three-pointers by Marinovic and Johnson fixed the score at 61-50 after 30 minutes. Johnson insisted from downtown early in the fourth quarter and soon added a jumper which made it a 16-point game, 66-50. Lee banked in a running hook and added a layup but a wide open triple by Fortson restored a 69-54 Banvit margin with 7 minutes left. A red hot Johnson buried yet another triple and a huge dunk by Moerman sealed the outcome, 74-54, midway through the fourth quarter. Steaua struggled to score when it mattered most while Fortson and Moerman made sure all Banvit fans celebrated an important home win.
