Tobey, Puerto lead Valencia to epic win

Valencia Basket overcame injuries and absences to rally past Promitheas Patras 68-71 at Dimitris Tofalos Arena on Wednesday. Valencia improved to 7-3 in Group A while Promitheas lost its fourth in a row and dropped to 2-7. Mike Tobey led the winners with a EuroCup career-high 22 points. Neno Dimitrijevic added 10 for Valencia. Dimitris Agravanis paced Promitheas with 22 points, Kendrick Ray added 15 and Trevis Simpson had 13 in his debut for the hosts. Promitheas led 68-61 lead with over 3 minutes left but Josep Puerto and Tobey combined for all the points in a 0-10 final run that won it.

Jerai Grant got Promitheas going with a tip-in that Sam Van Rossom bettered with a bomb from downtown. Tobey added a turnaround jumper for a 2-5 Valencia lead. Dimitris Agravanis hit a jump hook and Ray scored in penetration to give the hosts a 6-5 edge. Tobey and Dimitrijevic buried consecutive jumpers, but Agravanis scored in the low post and Simpson buried a mid-range shot for a 10-9 score. Martin Hermansson nailed a jumper off the dribble and Dimitrijevic gave Valencia a 10-13 lead. Nikolaos Rogkavopoulos stepped up with a backdoor layup and Simpson ignited the crowd with a dunk, but Millan Jimenez gave Valencia a 14-15 lead after 10 minutes.

Jimenez and a red-hot Simpson traded three-pointers early in the second quarter. Dimitrijevic followed a driving layup with a floater for a 17-22 Valencia cusion. Ray and Agravanis answered with back-to-back layups, but Tobey took over with a three-point play and a power layup and Puerto followed that with a fastbreak basket to boost the guests' lead to 23-29. Grant stepped up with an alley-oop slam, Ray buried a mid-range shot and Agravanis fired in a triple but Louis Labeyrie and Hermannsson kept Valencia in charge, 30-36. Mihajlo Andric banked in a floater and Ray buried a step-back triple to fix the halftime score at 34-35.

Labeyrie buried a triple right after the break and Dimitrijevic added a driving basket, but Ray singlehandedly kept Promitheas close at 40-41. Abdul Gaddy followed a driving layup with a jumper, igniting a 9-0 run highlighted by Grant's dunk which Agravanis capped with a three-point play to give Promitheas a 49-43 lead. Tobey rescued Valencia with an alley-oop slam, but Agravanis scored again and Dario Hunt added a three-point play to boost the lead to 54-45. Tobey kept pushing the visitors and got help from Hermannsson and Jimenez to give Valencia hope, 57-52, after 30 minutes.

Van Rossom buried a six-meter jumper early in the fourth quarter and Labeyrie dunked to make it a one-point game. Simpson downed a three-pointer, but Van Rossom answered from downtown and fed Tobey for an alley-oop dunk that completed Valencia's comeback, 60-61, with 6 minutes left. Agravanis stepped up for the hosts and Simpson sank a corner triple, giving Promitheas fresh air at 65-61. Puerto swished a three-pointer and Tobey followed a put-back dunk with a backdoor layup that tied it, 68-68, with 1:31 to go. Puerto split free throws and drew a foul again with 19.6 seconds remaining. He made both attempts and Ray missed from downtown at the buzzer.

Tobey has career-best night against Promitheas

Valencia Basket grabbed its fourth consecutive victory in Group A by downing Promitheas Patras 68-71 on the road. Center Mike Tobey was its pillar, leading Valencia to a big win with a career-high 22 points on 10-of-13 two-point shooting. He added 9 rebounds and 4 fouls drawn for a PIR of 25, also a personal-best in the competition. Valencia was without six main players, including big men Jaime Pradilla, Bojan Dubljevic and Jasiel Rivero. Louis Labeyrie fouled out and Promitheas led 68-61 but Tobey scored twice in a 0-10 run that allowed Valencia to rally past its opponents and get another victory.

Simpson has stunning EuroCup debut

Even though Promitheas Patras fell 68-71 against Valencia Basket in Regular Season Round 10, there was good news from EuroCup newcomer Trevis Simpson. In his competition debut, Simpson came off the bench and had 13 points on 2-of-3 two-point shooting and 3-of-5 on three-pointers, helping Promitheas to get the lead in the second half. Power forward Dimitris Agravanis matched his EuroCup career-high with 22 points, but a late 0-10 run allowed Valencia to rally past Promitheas and hand the Greek powerhouse its fourth consecutive loss in Group A.

Short-handed Valencia does it again

Valencia Basket started its Round 10 showdown against Promitheas Patras with a short-handed lineup. Valencia was without six regular members of its first-team roster - Victor Claver, Klemen Prepelic, Jaime Pradilla, Xabi Lopez-Arostegui, Bojan Dubljevic and Jasiel Rivero - but managed to beat Promitheas in Patras, 68-71. Valencia already got a road victory in a similar situation, downing Virtus Segafredo Bologna 96-97 without Claver, Mike Tobey, Neno Dimitrijevic and Louis Labeyrie, and showed great character in Patras once again. Tobey led the way with a EuroCup career-high 22 points and Josep Puerto had 6 points, including the go-ahead free throws, in a 0-10 run that allowed Valencia to win the game.

Head Coaches

ZOUROS, ILIAS
Promitheas Patras
"First of all, congratulations to Valencia. Unfortunately, it was a bad loss for us. The biggest problem is that, in the last quarter, especially in the last minutes, we were not focused and this is something that we need to work on to become better. We tried hard all game long, as we did also against Reyer, but one more time, we gave up at the end of the game. We didn't play as team, offensively and defensively, and gave them the chance to win the game. Good luck to Valencia in the next games. We have to be concentrated in our schedule, EuroCup and especially also in the Greek League."
PENARROYA, JOAN
Valencia Basket
"We are very happy for the win. We came here in a difficult situation and it is obvious that we didn't play our most fluid game on offense or defense, but I believe we hung on to the game. I hope that when we play again on Tuesday, we will bring back most of our players. This is what we expect - if not, things will be complicated. I believe it will be like that, but they would have not done almost anything for one week. Like I said many times, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and we carry on. I hope in the next weeks, we will have our whole roster, but in the last five months, it has not been possible."

Players

JIMENEZ, MILLAN
Valencia Basket
"It is true that we didn't have all 12 players that are in the first roster, but us, the young players, have already shown in previous games that we could do well and help on the court and in that sense, we did it one more time. And we won, so we are very happy. It happened in the past - Valencia missing many players - and we were able to solve it. We were able to hang in there, grind our teeth and our effort and character allowed us to win the game. We will now play against Buducnost and Gran Canaria. I hope we are lucky enough to bring back the teammates we are missing. We are going for more and if we have the same players, we will carry on and pull out another win."
TOBEY, MIKE
Valencia Basket
"I think, for us, it was just to keep fighting. We came here short-handed, a lot of guys had COVID, so we knew we were going to have to fight in order to get out of here with a win, and we fought until the end. They were leading going into the fourth quarter but we just kept fighting and were lucky to get out of here with a win. We made a lot of clutch plays in the end and Puerto made some clutch free throws for us. I am really proud of our effort today."
