Besiktas lands Deron Williams
Jul 19, 2011
Besiktas Cola Turka found a star playmaker to lead its charge in the Eurocup Qualifying Round by signing Olympic gold medal winner Deron Williams to a one-year contract. Williams (1.91 meters, 27 years old) played last season for Utah and New Jersey of the NBA, where he averaged 20.1 points and was third in the league with 10.3 assists over 65 games. He has averaged 17.2 points and 9.2 assists per game during his six-year NBA career. He was selected to the All-Star team in both 2010 and '11. Williams has also represented Team USA in international competition with whom he won gold medals at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Besiktas marks Williams's first professional club in Europe. It is also the second time in as many seasons that Besiktas has signed a former NBA All-Star. Last season the club signed Allen Iverson to a lucrative deal, but his time in Istanbul was cut short by injury. Besiktas will open its season against Dexia Mons-Hainaut of Belgium in a two-game, total-points Eurocup Qualifying Round series set for September 27 and October 4.
