Nov 21, 2013
Right before the home game of Round 6 that brought a win for the team against Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem, Lukoil Academic Sofia honored one of its most recognizable icons, Georgi Panov, on occasion of his 80th birthday. Panov had played in two European club finals with Academic in 1958 and in 1959 against Latvian ASK Riga, in the first two editions of the top basketball competition in the continent. Also, Panov played in three consecutive Olympic games - Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956 and Rome 1960 -, at the World championship in Santiago 1959 and in 6 European championships. Panov is 12 times Bulgarian champion and 2 times Bulgarian Cup winner. Before the game, he was honored by the Bulgarian basketball federation and personally by the president - the only one Bulgarian in NBA - Georgi Gloushkov and by the Board of Lukoil and Lukoil Academic sports director Sasho Vezenkov.
