Baskets Bamberg found a new point guard in Janis Strelnieks, who signed a one-year with the German powerhouse on Tuesday. Strelnieks (1.91 meters, 24 years old) arrives from Budivelnik Kiev, which he helped reach the Eurocup semifinals and win the Ukrainian double - league and cup titles - last season. He averaged 8.1 points and 2.6 assists in 10 Turkish Airlines Euroleague games, but once Budivelnik was eliminated, Strelnieks boosted his numbers to 10.9 points on 87.5% free throws and 4.1 assists in 10 Eurocup showdowns. He started his career with boyhood club Ventspils of Latvia and also played for Spartak St. Petersburg of Russia before joining Budivelnik. Strelnieks is also a regular member of the Latvian national team. He helped Spartak reach the Eurocup semifinals in 2012 and lifted the Latvian League title with Ventspils in 2009. Strelnieks also led Latvia to a bronze medal at the 2007 U18 European Championships. Despite his young age, this will be Strelnieks's sixth Eurocup season.
"Our goal was to sign a high-caliber European player and we are very pleased to have found this in Strelnieks," Brose Baskets sports director Wolfgang Heyder said. "He has a high basketball IQ and is a good passer and shooter, in the tradition of [former Brose Baskets players] Uvis Helmanis and Gert Kullamae."
