Akasvayu GironaClub Basquet Girona announced in a press conference on Friday that it will not take part in the Eurocup or the Spanish League (ACB) next season. The club could not match the economic standards required to compete in both competitions due to its critical financial situation. Even though the club will not play at the highest levels next season, C.B. Girona will carry on existing, taking part in youth competitions. C.B. Girona has played in the ACB for 20 consecutive seasons and comes off its brightest period ever. With players like Arriel McDonald, Marc Gasol and Victor Sada, Akasvayu Girona won the 2007 FIBA Cup title, downing Azovmash Mariupol 79-73 in the final. It also reached the ULEB Cup title game last season, but DKV Joventut stood in its way to success. "Basquet Girona will not inscribe in the ACB and will not be able to compete at the highest level," Girona spokesman Santi Sarda said in the press conference. "We have to thank everybody that made the effort to help us. We did all we could." Euroleague Basketball will take a decision on how to replace Girona once it receives official confirmation of the club's withdrawal.
