Valencia inks coach Martinez

Valencia Basket found a new coach in Pedro Martinez, who inked a one-year deal with the Eurocup powerhouse on Sunday. Martinez, age 54, arrives from Spanish side La Bruixa d'or Manresa. He has plenty of Eurocup experience and led Akasvayu Girona to the then-called ULEB Cup title game in 2008, downing Unics Kazan and Dynamo Moscow before losing against DKV Joventut Badalona. Martinez won the 1990 Korac Cup title with Joventut, sweeping the two-way finals against Scavolini Pesaro to become the youngest coach - age 28 - to win a European club competition. He has also coached Manresa, Salamanca, Ourense, Granada, Menorca, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Tau Ceramica, Estudiantes and Sevilla. Martinez ranks second in most games coached in Spanish League history - 711, only trailing Aito Garcia Reneses. Martinez also reached the Eurocup quarterfinals with Gran Canaria in 2010 and took that team to the Spanish League semifinals in 2013.
