Galatasaray holds on to Coach Ataman
Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul reached a new agreement with head coach Ergin Ataman to keep working together until the end of the 2016-17 season, the club announced Wednesday. Ataman, age 49, has coached Galatasaray in the last three seasons, leading it to win the Turkish League title in 2013 and helping it reach the Turkish Airlines Euroleague playoffs in 2014. Last season, Ataman helped Galatasaray reach the Euroleague Top 16 and the Turkish League playoffs. Ataman started his coaching career with Turk Telekom Ankara in 1996. He has also coached Pinar Karsiyaka, Efes Pilsen, Ulker, Besiktas and the Turkish national team in his native country, as well as Montepaschi Siena and Fortitudo Bologna in Italy. He helped Montepaschi win the Saporta Cup title in 2002 and reach the Euroleague Final Four in 2003. He led Besiktas to win three titles - Turkish League, Turkish Cup and EuroChallenge - in 2012. Ataman led Efes to win the Turkish League title in 2009 and to reach the Euroleague Final Four in 2000, and helped Ulker win consecutive Turkish Cup trophies in 2004 and 2005.
