Herbalife Gran Canaria is the Spanish Supercup champion! Gran Canaria won its first official title by downing FC Barcelona Lassa 79-59 in Vitoria, Spain on Saturday. Bo McCalebb led the winners with 15 points. Darko Planinic added 12 while Eulis Baez had 11 for Gran Canaria. Juan Carlos Navarro and Victor Claver led Barcelona with 12 points apiece. Gran Canaria had a strong start and an outstanding McCalebb followed a three-pointer with a backdoor layup to give his team a 21-9 lead. Barcelona found a go-to guy in Claver, who had 5 points in an 0-8 run to bring his team within 21-17. Free throws by Planinic fixed the score at 23-17 after 10 minutes. Planinic kept pacing Gran Canaria early in the second quarter and got plenty of help from Kyle Kuric to keep their team way ahead, 41-30. Navarro and Justin Doellman stepped up for Barcelona but an outstanding McCalebb restored a 50-39 Gran Canaria margin at halftime. Gran Canaria kept rolling after the break, improving its defense and keeping Barcelona scoreless for more than 3 minutes. Meanwhile, a free throw by Albert Oliver broke the game open, 60-39, after a 12-0 run. Brad Oleson and Navarro gave Barcelona hope, 62-48, after 30 minutes. Nothing changed after that, as even when Barcelona got within single sigits, 62-53, Kuric and Baez made sure all Gran Canaria fans had plenty of time to celebrate a truly historical win.
