UNICS keeps EuroCup champ Smith

UNICS Kazan reached a new agreement with shooting guard Jamar Smith to extend their relationship until the end of the 2019-20 season, the club announced Thursday. Smith (1.91 meters, 31 years old) averaged 13.1 points on 100% free throw shooting, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals in 19 7DAYS EuroCup games last season. He helped UNICS reach the EuroCup quarterfinals and the VTB League semifinals. He joined UNICS from Unicaja Malaga, where he became a EuroCup champion in the 2016-17 season. Smith averaged 10.3 points on 43% three-point shooting in 21 EuroCup games that season. He played a critical role in the finals, scoring 20 points in Game 2 to let Unicaja tie the series and 8 of his 10 points in his team's fourth-quarter comeback in the team’s trophy-winning Game 3 victory. Smith started his career with Maine of the D-League and also played for Prostejov of the Czech Republic, Altshuler Saham Galil Gilboa of Israel, Brose Bamberg of Germany and Limoges CSP of France before joining Unicaja in 2015. He also helped Gilboa win the Balkan League title in 2013. It will be Smith's fifth EuroCup season. Along with UNICS and Unicaja, he previously played the competition with Bamberg and Limoges, accumulating 568 points and 128 assists in 52 career games to date.
