ASVEL Villeurbanne hired Zvezdan Mitrovic to be its head coach for the next three years, the club announced on Tuesday. Mitrovic, 48, arrives from AS Monaco, which he had coached since March 2015. He helped Monaco win the French second division in 2015 and finish first in the French League regular season in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Mitrovic, a two-time French League coach of the year, helped Monaco win three consecutive French Leaders Cup titles from 2016 and 2018 and reach the Basketball Champions League final last season.
He started his coaching career with Buducnost Podgorica before joining Ukrainian side Khimik Yuzhny as head coach in 2002. Mitrovic also coached Krivbasbasket-Lux Kryvyi Rog, Budivelnik Kiev and Azovmash Mariupol in Ukraine before joining Monaco. He helped Krivbasbasket win the Ukrainian UBL title in 2009 and also won the Ukrainian Cup with Budivelnik in 2012. Mitrovic has coached the French U20 and the Montenegrin national teams, too.
