7DAYS EuroCup newcomer Germani Brescia Leonessa is back in Top 16 contention after its resounding 88-65 win over Galatasaray Istanbul on Wednesday night. Brescia, which was on the brink of elimination ahead of its must-win Round 8 game, now knows that just about everything in regards to its EuroCup faith will be decided in the final round of the regular season against ratiopharm Ulm.
In its latest win, which improved the team's record to 3-5, Brescia found a path to victory in a little bit of an unusual way. Coach Andrea Diana's team relied heavily on its outside shooting, so much so that it shot a season-high 32 attempts from long range to only 26 from inside the arc, which was the team's season-low. It produced 13 triples at 40% accuracy and 15 two-pointers at a very solid 57.7%.
What really made the difference, however, was Brescia's control of the glass. Playing against the EuroCup's leading rebounding team, Brescia outrebounded Galatasaray 39-27. It was a total team effort, too, as seven different players had 4 or more rebounds for Brescia's second-highest total of its debut season. Holding Galatasaray to a season-low 27 rebounds was actually a much tougher task. It gets even more impressive knowing that Galatasaray not only entered the game averaging 38.7 per contest, but also was coming off a game where it shattered its EuroCup record by grabbing 53 in a win over Ulm. Having in mind that Brescia committed 17 turnovers while forcing only 12, the rebounding battle was that much more important.
Brescia still needs at least a win over Ulm in Round 10 to get to the next phase, but if this team does eventually find its place in the Top 16, this just might be the game to look back on and remember as a key to potential success.
