Lokomotiv used trademark defense to win milestone game

It was a bit of a festive occasion on Wednesday night in Krasnodar, where Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar became the 14th club to play 100 games in the EuroCup. Having made its debut in the 2011-12 season, Lokomotiv is in its sixth EuroCup campaign. With its 79-21 all-time record, no team has a better winning percentage in competition history than Lokomotiv. Looking back at its previous five seasons, Lokomotiv won the 2013 EuroCup trophy, had a 19-game winning season in 2014-15 and a 20-2 record last season when it also tied its own EuroCup record winning streak of 20 and also set the mark for most consecutive wins to start the season (20).

The club has never had fewer than nine wins in a EuroCup season and on Wednesday against Cedevita reached its eighth win of this season. Lokomotiv took the lead for good in the first half behind its defense, holding Cedevita to 27 points before halftime on 1-for-11 three-point shooting, while allowing only 3 assists and forcing 5 turnovers.

Even though that defensive level dropped in the second half, it forced Cedevita to play from behind the rest of the night. Playing with the lead is something that Lokomotiv likes to do and has done plenty of over the years behind its trademark defense. Lokomotiv has allowed 71.4 points per game in these 100 games, which is the fifth-lowest in competition history and the lowest by a team with at least 50 games played.

On a night the club reached a milestone, it was only fitting to see the team pull out another win and use a performance similar to many of those we have witnessed over the years from Lokomotiv.
