Buducnost VOLI Podgorica returns to the 7DAYS EuroCup with a brand new look. The Montenegrin champion hired Coach Slobodan Subotic, who returns to the EuroCup for the first time since the 2010-11 season. Buducnost signed experienced guards in Justin Cobbs and Scott Bamforth in addition to three-point threat Scott Wood, who will change many games with his outside shooting. Power forward Hassan Martin and center Martins Meiers will see most of the playing time under the baskets. Buducnost also kept a core of domestic players, who are experienced and ready to help the newcomers adjust as quickly as possible.
Justin Cobbs and Scott Bamforth have played the EuroCup in the past and that is always a plus. Cobbs is a fast, active playmaker who likes to attack the basket for easy points in the lane or from the free-throw line. He ranked fifth in assists in the EuroCup last season (5.5 apg.) for Cedevita Zagreb. Bamforth is a sharpshooter with unlimited range, which may be Buducnost's first option in crunch time. He comes off an ACL injury but his heart, determination and talent should not be questioned. Bamforth is also a surprising rebounder for a player his size and weight. Nikola Ivanovic, who was chosen to the All-EuroCup Second Team two years ago, is back to provide outside shooting, silent leadership and a great basketball IQ. A young veteran at age 22, Petar Popovic provides intensity, shooting skills and aggressiveness. His role will be critical, especially on defense. Suad Sehovic is a three-point specialist and a reliable defender at small forward. In his seventh season with the club, Sehovic is a mentor for up-and-coming youngsters Igor Drobnjak and Fedor Zugic.
Scott Wood is a versatile forward and an intriguing addition. When on fire, Wood can change any game with his three-point shooting, which forces defenses to focus on him. Wood helps on the boards and has experience, too. Hassan Martin and Martin Meiers are Buducnost's additions to a frontcourt that worked well last season. Martin led the German League in blocks last season (2.0 bpg.) due to his great timing and athleticism. He is also a very good rebounder, especially on the offensive end, and an effective scorer down low. Expect him to play a leading role for his new team. Meiers provides strength, size and power at center. With so many good three-point shooters, having Meiers and Martin, two solid scorers in the paint able to power the offensive glass, balances the team well. Danilo Nikolic will open the floor with his outside shooting while Aleksa Ilic and Zoran Nikolic give Coach Subotic plenty of options under the basket.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Buducnost has a deep roster in which many players can stand out, but Hassan Martin has the most potential to surprise people as a EuroCup newcomer. At age 23, he has already showcased his all-around skills in Japan and Germany before joining Buducnost. An undersized big man at 2.01 meters, Martin is a candidate to lead the EuroCup in blocked shots and will change a lot of shots on defense due to his aggressiveness and activity. Martin can be expected to contribute on offense through close baskets from offensive rebounds and by using his power and post skills to score down low. Martin will play at the EuroCup level for the first time in his career, which adds more anticipation to his first season in the competition. He has all it takes - determination, power, a winning mentality - to be a star in this competition and is ready to help this good shooting team in many different ways.
Buducnost has taken several steps forward in the last couple of seasons, winning the Adriatic League in 2018, playing the 2018-19 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and returning to the Adriatic League finals a few months ago in which it took the series against Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade the distance. The core of returning players gained valuable experience that will surely make them all more competitive at this level. Buducnost built a team that can work very well right away, with Wood and Bamforth providing the fireworks from beyond the arc, a strong frontcourt ready to battle in the paint and the reliable Cobbs and Ivanovic running the show. With this roster, Buducnost can be ambitious and try to match - or surpass - its best previous results; it made it to the quarterfinals in 2012, 2013 and 2018.
