Round 9 qualification possibilities

Nine teams have qualified so far for the 7DAYS EuroCup Top 16, which leaves seven spots still available heading into Round 9 of the regular season. The most wide-open situation is in Group C which has all four Top 16 tickets waiting to be claimed, while Group B still has four teams battling for two open spots. One of those in each group could be decided on Tuesday, however each group will have at least one Top 16 ticket remain available for the regular season finale in Round 10 next week.

Group A

ratiopharm Ulm vs. AS Monaco, December 11
MoraBanc Andorra vs. Maccabi Rishon LeZion, December 11
Segafredo Virtus Bologna vs. Promitheas Patras, December 11

Four teams have booked their Top 16 spots in Group A, but how those teams – Segafredo Virtus Bologna (6-2), Promitheas Patras (6-2), AS Monaco (5-3) and MoraBanc Andorra (5-3) - will finish in the standings is to be determined over the final two regular season rounds. All four teams can still finish in first place, but Virtus and Promitheas, which play each other, each have the chance to clinch it on Wednesday. Virtus needs to win by 10 points or more and see Monaco lose to clinch first place. Promitheas, to clinch first place, needs to win and see both Andorra and Monaco lose.

Group B

Rytas Vilnius vs. Tofas Bursa, December 10
Limoges CSP vs. Umana Reyer Venice, December 10
Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar vs. Partizan NIS Belgrade, December 11

Two Top 16 spots are still open in Group B, and a key game in the race takes place on Tuesday when fourth-placed Rytas Vilnius (3-5) plays host to third-placed Tofas Bursa (4-4). Tofas will qualify with a win. Rytas will make it to the Top 16 if it wins by at least 21 points in regulation time. Rytas can also qualify if it beats Tofas by at least 11 points in regulation and if group leader Umana Reyer Venice (6-2) defeats Limoges CSP (2-6). Otherwise, neither will qualify in Round 9. Limoges will be eliminated if it loses, or if Tofas wins and Lokomotiv (3-5) beats Partizan mts Belgrade (6-2) on Wednesday. Meanwhile, in the battle for first place, Reyer can clinch with a victory if Partizan loses. Such an outcome would also lock Partizan into second place in the standings after Round 9.

Group C

Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul vs. Germani Brescia Leonessa, December 10
Joventut Badalona vs. UNICS Kazan, December 11
Nanterre 92 vs. Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana, December 11

There are no qualified teams in this group, but that is likely to change after a lone Tuesday game in which Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul (5-3) hosts Germani Leonessa Brescia (4-4). Darussafaka qualifies if it wins or loses by fewer than 35 points. Even if it loses that big, Darussafaka still can go through on Wednesday. However, the outcome of that Darussafaka vs. Brescia clash is important for all other teams.

In case Darussafaka beats Brescia:

Darussafaka qualifies. UNICS Kazan (5-3) qualifies on Wednesday if it beats Joventut Badalona (4-4) on the road. UNICS also qualifies if Nanterre 92 (3-5) beats Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana (3-5). UNICS also qualifies with a defeat by fewer than 43 points if Olimpija beats Nanterre. Joventut qualifies if it beats UNICS and if Nanterre wins. Meanwhile, Olimpija is eliminated if it loses and Joventut wins.

In case Brescia beats Darussafaka:

Darussafaka qualifies if it loses by fewer than 35 points. Even if it loses by that much, Darussafaka qualifies if Nanterre wins or if UNICS wins. UNICS (5-3) qualifies with a win. UNICS also qualifies with a defeat by fewer than 20 points if Olimpija beats Nanterre. Joventut qualifies with a win of 2 or more points in regulation time if Nanterre also wins. Brescia qualifies if UNICS and Olimpija win, as well. Brescia can also qualify if it wins by 35 or more points in regulation time, if Joventut wins by more than 44 points in regulation time and if Olimpija wins at the same time. Meanwhile, Olimpija is eliminated if it loses, and so is Nanterre.

Group D

Unicaja Malaga vs. EWE Baskets Oldenburg, December 10
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica vs. Galatasaray Doga Sigorta Istanbul, December 11
Asseco Arka Gdynia vs. Dolomiti Energia Trento, December 11

With three teams already qualified and just one Top 16 spot still open, there are two separate battles in Group D – one for the first place and one for the final Top 16 spot. Tuesday's game between already qualified Unicaja Malaga (6-2) and EWE Baskets Oldenburg (5-3) is important to the first-place race. Unicaja will clinch first place if its wins and if already-qualified Galatasaray Doga Sigorta Istanbul (5-3) loses against Buducnost VOLI Podgorica (2-6) on Wednesday. Unless that happens, first place will be decided in the final round. The key game for the last Top 16 qualification in the group is on Wednesday, when Asseco Arka Gdynia (3-5) hosts Dolomiti Energia Trento (3-5). Arka will qualify if it wins and Buducnost loses. Meanwhile, Trento qualifies to the Top 16 if it wins by 21 or more points. Trento can also qualify if it wins by at least 11 points and Buducnost loses.
