UNICS Kazan came into Round 10 with the mathematical possibility of missing out on the 7DAYS EuroCup Top 16. But the 2011 champion used a strong defensive performance and balanced effort to end a three-game skid and even snatch first place in Group C.
UNICS reeled off five straight wins before having lost its last three games coming into the home showdown with Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul. Five players scored in double figures as the hosts pulled off a 71-68 victory for a 6-4 record and the top spot in the group.
Evgeny Kolesnikov (14 points), Errick McCollum (13), Raymar Morgan (12), Jamar Smith (11) and Alex Tyus (10 points) all hit double digits with the team picking up 18 assists and just 10 turnovers. McCollum was especially good as he also had 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winning side.
The 68 points allowed were UNICS's third-fewest this season, behind a 77-63 home win over Germania Brescia Leonessa in Round 6 and an 80-67 home victory over Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana in Round 2.
Darussafaka started the game on fire, hitting 6 of 7 three-pointers in the first quarter. The visitors ended with 12-of-25 three-point shooting (48.0%). And UNICS was especially strong with its shots inside the stripe as Darussafaka made just 11 of 29 (37.9%) on two-pointers.
