Unicaja Malaga extended another core piece from its team by agreeing with veteran playmaker Gal Mekel on a two-year contract on Wednesday. Mekel (1.92 meters, 32 years old) joined Unicaja in early March after spending the first part of the 2019-20 season with Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia where he posted 12.1 points and 5.6 assists in the Italian League action. For Unicaja, he averaged 8.8 points and 5.6 assists in six games in the Spanish League.
Mekel is a veteran of 39 appearances over five 7DAYS EuroCup seasons. He debuted in the competition in 2010-11 with Hapoel Galil Gilboa from his native Israel and the latest was with Zenit St Petersburg in the 2018-19 campaign. Mekel has averaged 8.9 points and 5.1 assists in the EuroCup, which he also played with Benetton Basket, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv and Herbalife Gran Canaria. He has played in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague for Maccabi, Nizhny Novgorod and Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade as well as for Dallas and New Orleans in the NBA.
