UNICS re-signs sharp shooter Smith
UNICS Kazan reached a new agreement with shooting guard Jamar Smith to keep working together next season, with an option to extend the contract until the end of the 2021-22 campaign, the club announced Tuesday. Smith (1.91 meters, 33 years old) averaged 15.2 points on 52.8% three-point shooting and 3.7 assists in 15 7DAYS EuroCup games last season. He ranked third in three-point shots made (47), eighth in scoring and third in three-point shooting percentage. Only one player in competition history hit more three-point shots than Smith with a better percentage in a single season: Henry Domercant buried 52-of-92 attempts from downtown (57.1%) playing for Dynamo Moscow in the 2007-08 campaign. Smith won the 2016-17 EuroCup title with Unicaja Malaga, averaging 10.3 points in 21 games. He had 20 points in Game 2 of the Finals in Malaga and 10 in Game 3 at La Fonteta, which allowed Unicaja to rally past Valencia in the fourth quarter and lift the trophy. Smith started his career with Maine of the D-League and also played for Prostejov of the Czech Republic, Altshuler Saham Galil Gilboa of Israel, Brose Baskets Bamberg of Germany and Limoges CSP of France. In 88 EuroCup career games with Bamberg, Limoges, Unicaja and UNICS, Smith has amassed 1,042 points (11.8 ppg.) to rank 15th all-time in scoring. He is third in three-point shots made (206), only trailing Marko Popovic (207) and Rafa Martinez (223), so Smith has a good chance to climb to the all-time top spot in the upcoming 2020-21 season.
