Things did not exactly look promising for Bahcesehir Koleji Istanbul ahead of its road game against Joventut Badalona. The winless Turkish club was facing the undefeated Group A leaders without the 7DAYS EuroCup's leading scorer Erick Green. But Jamal Jones, Ismet Akpinar and Alex Perez stepped up in Green's absence to make history.
Jones poured in 34 points and had a performance index rating of 38 while Akpinar tallied 23 points in Bahcesehir's 77-87 victory at Joventut – the club's first EuroCup win ever. Helping everyone out was Alex Perez, who scored only 4 points but dished out a career-high 13 assists.
Jones had come into the game averaging 9.3 points a game with a top showing of 17 points against JL Bourg in Round 1. Akpinar's scoring average before the game was 9.0 points with a season-high of 17 against Bourg in Round 7.
Perez for his part has been up and down with his scoring. He torched UNICS Kazan for 33 points and then scored just 2 points with 6 assists the next game against Joventut and went scoreless in Round 7 against UNICS. This time around, Perez let his passing do the talking with just 3 shots taken while dealing 13 assists. In the end, they all more than made up for the absence of Green, who tops the competition in scoring with 20.3 points while ranking fourth with a PIR of 23.7.
Jones was hot from the beginning, scoring 12 points in the first quarter. Akpinar picked up things in the second quarter with 3 three-pointers while Jones came back with 10 points in the third quarter. And with Joventut fighting back into the game in the final frame, Jones and Akpinar tallied 13 of Bahcesehir's final 17 points to secure the win.
"Every basketball player has one of those nights where every shot falls," Jones said afterward. "It was just one of those nights."
Just one of those nights when it turns out you don't need your team's leading scorer.
