Ferran Bassas had been kept silent for most of Joventut Badalona's all-Spanish showdown with Unicaja Malaga to open Group E in the 7DAYS EuroCup Top 16. But when the veteran stepped up late in the game with some three-point heroics, he also rewarded what was a career night for his teammate Vladimir Brodziansky, one of the surprises of the EuroCup season.
The Slovakian big man Brodziansky drained 4 three-pointers in scoring a team-high 21 points in Joventut's 86-95 victory in Malaga. Those 21 points and his 21 performance index rating were career bests for the 26-year-old.
Brodziansky played college basketball in the United States and then arrived back in Europe in 2018, playing two seasons with Obradoiro in Spain. Last summer, he switched to Joventut and is now making his EuroCup debut.
And what a debut it's been for the 2.11-meter forward. After his big performance on Wednesday, Brodziansky is averaging 13-0 points while hitting 42.9% of his three-pointers and 90.0% of his free throws to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists.
Brodziansky helped Joventut throughout the final three quarters in Malaga. His 8 straight points in the second helped keep Unicaja from pulling away. But when the home side did open its biggest lead of 12 points mid-way through the third quarter, it was Brodziansky who started the 0-10 response for Joventut with a three-pointer and added another triple to keep up the pressure.
In the final quarter, he hit 2 free throws to close the gap to 71-70 and start a 1-11 surge by the visitors. And then when Unicaja was fighting to stay close, Brodziansky drained a corner triple with under 3 minutes left to make it 81-86.
But it wasn't Brodziansky who delivered the knockout punch. Bassas had taken – and missed – his only shot in the game's first 38 minutes, though he dished out 5 assists. But when it was time to step up, Bassas was there.
He drained a three-pointer with 101 seconds left to make it 83-90, and after Deon Thompson answered in kind for Unicaja, took Nenad Dimitrijevic's kickout pass in rhythm and buried another triple to make it 86-93 with 14 seconds left.
With that, Bassas decided the game and made sure that Brodziansky would be rewarded for his career night.
