Group G is one of two Top 16 groups where one of the teams has already qualified for the quarterfinals after four games. It is the only group with a chance to have the standings and seedings of the top two teams determined already in Round 5. One of those two teams is Virtus Segafredo Bologna, which is undefeated on the season and already qualified for the quarterfinals. Virtus has been so dominant that each of its four Top 16 games has been won by double-digit margins.
|Virtus Segafredo Bologna
|Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana
|Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
|JL Bourg en Bresse
Virtus is 4-0 and will clinch first place in the group if it beats Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana on the road. Another win would also be another step for Virtus in its race to secure home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. Virtus enters Round 5 with a +58 point-difference, behind only Group H leader UNICS Kazan, which sits at +60 after four games.
Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana (3-1) vs. Virtus Segafredo Bologna (4-0), March 2
JL Bourg en Bresse (0-4) vs. Buducnost VOLI Podgorica (1-3), March 3
On the other hand, Cedevia Olimpija, which is undefeated on its home floor this season, would punch its quarterfinals ticket with a win over Virtus on Tuesday. If it fails, the team from the Slovenian capital would have another chance to qualify a day later if already eliminated Bourg beats Buducnost.
Buducnost does not hold its destiny in its hands. The Montenegrin powerhouse could already learn it has been eliminated before the tip-off of its Round 5 game, which would be the case if Cedevita Olimpija defeats Virtus on Tuesday. If Virtus wins, however, Buducnost must beat Bourg on the road to stay alive.
In the scenario where Virtus wins to secure first place and Buducnost loses to get eliminated, Olimpija would go through as the second place team from this group and face the Group E winner in the quarterfinals.
The outcomes of Round 5 will either give us all the answers in Group G or set up more high-drama for the regular-season finales.
Scenarios in Round 5:
Already-qualified Virtus clinches first place if it beats Olimpija.
Olimpija qualifies if it wins OR if Buducnost loses against Bourg.
Olimpija will qualify and be locked into second place if it loses AND Buducnost loses.
Buducnost is eliminated if it loses OR if Olimpija wins.
Bourg has already been eliminated from quarterfinals contention.
