Valencia Basket Club announced on Monday a contract extension with shooting guard Rafa Martinez, which will keep him with the club through the summer of 2016. Martinez (1.90 meters, 32 years old) helped Valencia win the Eurocup last season with 9.5 points on 52.6% three-point shooting plus 2.4 assists in 24 games. He was second in the competition in three-point accuracy. Martinez made 6 of 8 threes in the Eurocup Finals to help Valencia sweep Unics Kazan. Martinez first came to Valencia from Ricoh Manresa in 2008. In six seasons with Valencia, he’s won a pair of Eurocup titles. Martinez is fourth on the Eurocup career list with 144 three-pointers, sixth in games played with 84 and 12th in scoring with 831 points. Martinez made his Euroleague debut in 2010-11 with Valencia and averaged 10.7 points in helping the team reach the playoffs. He had started playing for Manresa in the 1999-00 season. He also joined Valls-Felix Hotel in the Spanish third division when Manresa sent him there on loan to find extended playing time. Martinez helped Manresa win the Spanish second division in 2007 and has also been a member of the Spanish under-18 and under-20 national teams.
