FC Bayern Munich had been a tough opponent for Khimki Moscow Region over the years. Bayern had beaten Khimki four times in the EuroLeague and twice in the 7DAYS EuroCup since the teams' first meeting back in 2015. One of those games went to overtime, in the 2016-17 EuroCup, and Bayern ended up winning it by 22 points, 74-96, after a 2-24 extra period.
Khimki came without one of its two former Bayern players, Stefan Jovic. The other, Devin Booker, received a trophy and a warm welcome in a pre-game ceremony. It was clear that Khimki would need something extraordinary to finally beat Bayern, and that is exactly what happened.
The game was a back-and-forth battle for the first 18 minutes. A big baseline dunk by Vladimir Lucic gave Bayern a 37-36 lead. Janis Timma quickly answered from downtown and then Anthony Gill, who had been scoreless until that point, copied him and soon added a fastbreak layup to give Khimki its biggest lead of the half, 37-44, seconds before the break.
Gill remained on fire after the break and quickly found help from Booker, who added 7 quick points. Nothing went in for Bayern, which missed 4 consecutive shots and committed 6 turnovers in the next 5 minutes after Lucic's dunk. By the time Booker struck from downtown, Khimki's lead was 37-56 and the Russian powerhouse was on a 0-20 run.
Nothing changed after that, as Khimki kept full control and Bayern kept committing turnovers, ultimately finishing the game with 19 to tie the club's record in a EuroLeague game. It previously had 19 turnovers against Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar on April 10, 2014.
"We are very happy because we made history. In our previous six games against Bayern Munich, we had zero victories and now it is the first time that we are changing this, now it is 1-6," Coach Kurtinaitis said after the game.
Alexey Shved, who had 19 points and 9 assists, was well-aware, too. "It is more important to win the game today [than my individual performance], because in the last few years, we lost all our games against Bayern, so it is big-time for us," Shved added.
Khimki recorded its first road win of this EuroLeague season right before a tough two-round week - at home against Panathinaikos OPAP Athens on Tuesday and on the road against Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Thursday. It will be another imprtant test for Khimki after it just aced this one!
